File Browsing and Opening Deathly Slow

Hey All,

Got a problem that is eluding the crap out of me. We have two terminal servers in our company, and they are both acting slower than death when performing any types of file creation, saving, editing, etc. For example, someone browses to the client files drive and opens a document. 8 out of 10 times, Word will hang for a good 15-30 seconds before opening the document. Same thing when saving. Other programs that have files open on the network like database files are also hanging. For all I can tell, the network cards are working fine, and they are on a Gigabit backbone. All service packs are up to date. Can anyone shed some light on this, it's driving me nuts! Both Terminal Server are Dual Xeon 2.8 Ghz with 4GB of RAM.

On your client's workstation, explore the drive mappings and make sure that all of the mapped network drives are working/active. Look for "dead mapped drive" and disconnect it. If there are mapped drives that are not needed, disconnect them also. This should make the browsing faster. As far as for your servers, try this tweak;

I had similar problem. I accidentally mapped a drive with a wrong path and in XP/2000 there is an option checked "Automatically search for network folders and printers". As Johnbbc suggested make sure all the mapped drives and printer are working, if they aren't working then disconnect it. Also you can uncheck "Automatically search for network folders and printers". You can find that option by going to “My Computer” --> “Tools” --> “Folder Options” --> “view”, there you will see the first option is "Automatically search for network folders and printers"
