If the Front-end server is in the DMZ should it be a stand-alone server?

You mean, as in not a member server or DC? Or as in a single Exchange server in an org?

It needs to be part of the Domain.
ie create rules in firewall to allow this access between FE and BE. There are proceudres on the net showing what needs to be done - probably biased to isa server though.

We have the Back-end server (Exchange 2003) inside the local network. It is a member server not a DC. I want to set up the front-end server in the DMZ for users to access their email from the internet using HTTPS (SSL). This makes the client to the Front-end server secure, not the Front-end server to the Back-end server connection. IPSec would do that. I've seen "member server in the DMZ" arguments both ways. Not sure which way as of yet.
