Hi All,

We have a client experiencing fax problems on an IPO 9.1.0.437.
The incoming lines are via SIP supplied by Gamma.
The T.38 fax settings on the SIP are default.
The extensions have T.38 fax support enabled and the fax settings are default.
The extensions are 3rd party SIP extensions and connect to AudioCodes MP-112 FXS gateways which are configured for T.38 Relay.
The fax machines are Kyocera Taskalfa 4052ci MFP units.

The transmission fairly often get cut off or they cannot send faxes at all, the error codes all point to an interruption in the G3 transmission.

Fax Communication Error: Reception in G3 mode was interrupted by a signal error. During message reception, transmission time exceeded the maximum transmission time per line.

And the problem seems to be getting worse, any suggestions please?

Fax over SIP is an afterthought, as such it's fairly crap in all but tightly controlled environments, regardless of system, we avoid it at all costs.
Fax to email is by far the best option or just email, it is 2018 after all... not 1998
Also some hospitals/doctors insist it has to be done by fax, not true, they don't understand the rules/alternatives completely :)

Hey amriddle01 I swear you live in these forums!

The problem is the banks, they are obsessed that fax is super secure when sending bank details for transfers!
As such ALL our solicitor type clients insist on fax.
I would happily burn all fax machines, I even had to dust one off to test the system lol.

Then ISDN is an easy sell, far more secure than SIP. I could easily Wireshark a SIP call and play it back to a fax receiver as many times as I like.
If security is their thing and they don't trust stuff transmitted over the web then SIP is a big mistake :)

Use G711.
Turn off ECM on the fast machine.
Turn down the transmission speed to the lower speed on the fax machine.

I would 1st start and make sure sip provider supports t-38 standard, only half do

I would also like to see faxes disappear. Nevertheless every IPO has a little number of fax devices and they have to work.

My experience ether from ATA to IPO or from IPO to provider is that even if T38 is made to make faxing more reliable it works better with plain G711.

Installed an insurance office about a month ago or so and they also insisted on security of fax over email.
then here comes the kicker
their fax machine emails it to them
[rofl]

Yes I am with all of you here that faxes are a relict of the 19th century (1843 to be more precise and older than the telephone) and we should take it out of its misery.
But until then I agree with rdoubrava: no ECM and max speed 14400 Bd even 9600 Bd if you can convince the fax maintainer of it.

If you must use fax with SIP then using a 3rd party ATA instead of a genuine analog connection to the IP office is just adding an extra layer of trouble.

unless you customer has multiple fax machines (in which case a fax gateway would b more appropriate anyway ) it may be simpler to simply connect to a dedicated Direct exchange line.

that said I would be surprised if the provider of an external fax gateway service would not have encryption & security options available even if the are not the default.

Do things on the cheap & it will cost you dear

Have you turned on the fax support option on the trunk on the Gamma portal?

Hi All,

Quick update and a thank you...

Something changes, I suspect on Gammas system as T.38 stopped working after a short outage when it had been working fine.
G.711 is not set and working across the board.

Thank you all for the guidance and help.

Cheers
Andy

To be fair I don't think it is just Gamma

I don't think any Sip provider is as good as ISDN

I agree, SIP isn't as good but the telcos are insistent on getting rid of ISDN!
