I am drawing a design blank, here. I am compressing (G.729) all calls between my remote site (S8300B LSP w/ G700 Media Gateway) and main site (S8710 CM3.1). How can I ensure that fax calls over the WAN are uncompressed (G.711)? Thanks in advance.

tbg247,

fax calls between two avaya endpoints can go in four modes: g.711 (not recommended), t.38 standard, fax relay, fax passthrough. fax relay is recommended afair. the mode you can set in ip-codec-set on the second page.

You set your preference on the ip-codec-set form in Site Administrator. You then use the ip-network-region form to define which codec set is used between the WAN sites. You'll see the choice for fax relay and fax pass-through on the second page of the ip-codec-set form. When a fax tone is sensed the call will switch to Avaya's proprietary fax relay mode, T.38 fax relay mode, or fax pass-through (essentially G.711) based upon what you chose. Your best choice for bandwidth and performance is fax relay, unless you have identified some special compatibility problem.
