I have a customer who just switched from a T1 to a PRI. They have an MICS, 7.0. Fax machines are of course, going through one of 6 ASMs.

At this point, they cannot send or receive faxes.

When one dials these fax machines directly (xxx-xxx-xxxx), they get a very distorted tone, rather than a traditional fax tone. You can tell it's the fax answering, however it sounds horrible, and I've never heard a sound like this in my 18 years of telecom. I am officially stumped.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

My first guess is the ASM. Do all the problem faxes punch down on the same ASM?

Yes, and that was my first guess as well. However, I just installed that ASM two weeks ago. Brand new, out of the box.

Faxes were working just fine until the T1 was switched to the PRI.

So, if use your butt set instead of the fax, it works?

Actually we tried with a butt set and an analog phone. Both came up sounding like hell. Looks like it is the ASM afterall.

UGH.

You said you had 6 ASMs, switch the fax to a known working ASM and test. Then you'll know.

Yup...we did do that. I neglected to post that in my previous entry.

Thanks

Have you tried power cycling the ASM? I've had the same issue with FSM's, especially when they're on extenders. That usually does the trick.
