Faulty Modem?

My old modem failed and I went to CompUSA and bought a Diamond SupraMax Pro modem.

I installed it and had no problems until I started connecting to things.

I don't have any trouble connection to my ISP (PeoplePC or to Juno) but no matter where I connect to, it disconnects within a few minutes at most, often in 30 seconds to a minute.

I can here an audible click from the modem and it's gone. I don't get any error messages or anything.

I have installed and reinstalled the modem, drivers, updated the drivers, and reinstalled my ISP software. Nothing seems to make any difference.

When I run the Windows Diagnostics it says the modem is fine.

I have always had very stable connections on this line even staying connected for up to 7 hours when downloading large files.

Anyone have any ideas. If not I'm going to take it back in the morning and get another USRobotics modem like those I have had in the past. I should have stuck with what I know I guess.

Just to check the modem settings for something set to drop the line after so many seconds - unlikely, and you've probably already done this.

Modem may just be faulty of course (I've had a number that appear ok in windows, query diagnostics is ok, but they just won't connect properly)

The modem seems to be the problem.

I took it back and exchanged it for a USRobotics modem that cost ten bucks more and just installed it.

I connected at 48k and I am online now.

So far so good I've been online for about 10 minutes so it looks like the problem is solved.

Serves me right I guess I have always used USR modems, this time I decided to try something else and it didn't work, LOL.

I have had 2 modem failures on this computer, a Dell 8200.

They both did the same thing.

They just quit connecting to the phone line. They would dial, the diagnostics said that they were Ok but they wouldn't connect. I could pick up the phone when it was dialing and there would still be a dial tone.
