I have a table with a char[10] field and 9 records. I put the numbers 1-9 in this field and then went into the table designer to add an index on the field. When it tried to do it, I got a fatal error message. I went back and changed the field to integer and reentered the numbers and it created an index, no problem. Does the index creater get confused when it finds what looks like numbers in a character field or was this just a random failure?

Hi Dave,

Interesting.... The Fatal Error must have been from the OS.
I am unable to attribute any cause as of now, to think, that VFP is creating this error. Would like to think that it is from OS only. You can enlighten, if it happens every time you redefine that.

If you have changed the field type, after the index creation, suggest.. drop the index first and then change the field type and then recreate it... to see if the behaviour repeats :)

But that would be too much like WORK! B-(

Ok I did it and didn't get the error. Must have been some random glitch in Win 2000. If if happens again, I'll write down the error location and see if anyone knows where that is.

Just as a note, that error usually happens when you have a corrupt index (CDX) file. Deleting and recreating usually cures the problem.

Ok, but the index wasn't created. Unless it was created corrupt and then wasn't saved when FoxPro aborted. Because when I started the project up again, there wasn't the new index I was trying to create. I don't know what the order is for creating then saving indexes.
