Help,
I've been trying to run scandisc (in windows) but it stops
and produces the following error(after checking File Allocation Tables):
Found backup copies of FAT with different names. They should be the same, do you want to fix.
When I choose yes,nothing happens.
Is there a simple fix for this??

When I've encountered that, I've always had to reboot and enter Command Prompt/MS-DOS mode and run chkdsk from the C:\ or C:\Windows prompt to correct it.

Thanks for the direction, I've tried to run chkdsk for both prompts and it said I should run scandisk instead.
I've tried to run this from both prompts but I'm getting an error that tells me that I do not have the driver HIMEM.sys on my disc and that there should be an entry in my config. sys file that states " Device=C:\Windows\HIMEM.sys". I've checked both the DOS windows dir and the OS windows dir and it that file is named there in both places.I ran msconfig to check for the entry in the config.sys tab, that is there also.
Can you keep directing me?

Hope you've already backed up....just in case

Try "SafeMode Command Prompt Only"
Scandisk /all

if good
Try "Safe Mode" and Start > Run Scandskw
"Scandisk" typed here, should invoke Scandskw (Windows scandisk, DOS scandisk is limited in repairing, such as no long file name repair support)

if no go
Try "Command prompt Only"
win /d:m to boot to safe mode and then run Scandskw from Start > Run

make sure
Device=C:\Windows\Himem.sys is NOT in quotes and is FIRST...at TOP of Config.sys
(example only)
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE
DOS High,UMB
use Msconfig to "move up" and "move down".

if nothing above works
go into msconfig and 'uncheck" Config.sys and Autoexec.bat(himem.sys may be double loading)

Try Booting from a Win98 Startup floppy, switch to C: and run Scandisk /all and win /d:m from the prompt for safe mode and then run scandskw (once you're in Safe Mode you can just start scandskw from the Win GUI if you like)

You "may" need to Boot from a fresh Good Win98 Startup Floppy and SYS C: (Though who knows what will happen if you do, so think carefully before proceeding)...Post back with --System Info
--Need Data on Disk? (not Backed up)
--using 95a,b,or c?? or 98,98SE?
--Have OS CDROM ??? which version??, and Startup Floppy?? (can d/l Startup disk at view the Read1st

Sorry for the lateness of this reply. I've tried all of the above(except the boots fro the floppy). Still nothing, actually I cannot start Windows from a DOS prompt as I still get the Himem error. I'm still trying though as I think my System Low on Resources Error that I get from time to time may be caused by this. If you have any directions for me that I must execute, especially in DOS, be gentle as I am very limited in my use of DOS.
As for my system info: Win98 SE rev 4.10.2222A; 127mb RAM; 866 P3 chip; 10g HD on a DELL Optiplex110. I have a DELL Recovery Disc that has Windows on it; and a startup floppy that I created when I last had to format the HD about a year and a half ago.
Appreciate the help.

Have you booted to the startup menu by holding the CTRL key towards the end of POST?
and chosen "Command Prompt Only?
Run Scandisk /all
from the command prompt

Boot from a Good floppy and run the command
