failure hdc does this stand for connection or crash?

Hello,
In fixing up old computer for great grandchild I get this message. Has the hard drive crashed or do I have a bad connection. Maybe cables to old?
Any help appreciated.

Something didn't work on the hard disk controller. The failure has nothing to do with the hard disk or cables. Would need more info of what you have to go any further. Ed Fair
