I have a new PC with Win 98, when I try to set up Internet Explorer it comes up with error message "failed to load Internet Connection Wizard Helper Component".

I have reinstalled Windows, installed IE6 from a different CD, gone to add-remove programs and tried to repair, and add component - the repair function doesnt work and the item doesnt appear in the list of components to be added.

Is there any way around this? The PC is on a MS network, doesnt use a modem.

You need 2 machines networked - one of them must have a modem installed to use ICS software.

This PC is at work and on a large network, there is no modem involved! I work in the IT dept and no-one here knows what to do about it (other than reformat and see if that cures it). Have set up Windows/Internet connection hundreds of times before and never seen this error message before!

Have you tried uninstalling the interent connection software in the control panel/ add/remove programmes under the windows tab?

Sounds as though you don't need it.

To the original poster, I have encountered this problem just today, and in the past. The problem seems to revolve not removing anything from the Program Files directory. WHAT specifically it is, I'm not sure. I've done a few searches both on this site, and on others, but have yet to come up with anything concrete. As soon as I get something, I'll post it to this thread.

Not sure if this site automatically posts URLs, or what. Sorry for the dupe link.

This will fix the problems. I found it on the Microsoft web site. I went through, and it was a snap to fix.

I have found an easier way to solve this problem (if you're on a network) simply rename all the files tags in the "wizard connection folder" (C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Connection Wizard)replacing tags .exe, .dll or whatever to .old (I even did this to the hidden files) then go to a computer on the network without this problem go to the same folder as described above and select all, copy and paste these files directly into the problem folder. Restart and whalla, your connection wizard will work.
