extra "#"s appear in dynamically populated textarea!

Hi all,
I have a textarea that i am populating dynamically. The value is #hypAuthorPic#, which grabs a hypertext address from the database. The problem is that an address such as

http://mysite.com/images/author1.gif

is showing up in the text area as #

http://mysite.com/images/author1.gif#.

Any ideas on why the address is coming back surrounded by #s?
