Greetings,

I am running XP Pro. I purchased an 160 Gig IOMEGA external HD that connects via the USB port. I have placed nothing on the HD. When I check its size, it shows as 149 Gig. IOMEGA finaly said they loaded some stuff on it and I could reformat it to get the full 160 Gig. OK. when I right click the drive and select format, the size window shows 149 Gig, and won't let me change it. I have accessed the drive through My Computer and get the same results.

Any ideas on how to get the full 160 Gig?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Matketing hype - competition:

There are actually 160 GB of single bytes.

But it takes 1024 single bytes to make 1K
1024K to make 1 meg
1024meg to make 1Gig

149GB is the capacity of a 160 drive

My C: drive is listed by the MFG. as 40gb it is actualy slightly larger due to the fact that in binary arithmatic 1024=1k but you need to subtract the the bytes used by partitioning and formating. Windows sees my C: drive as 37.2gb due to this loss. Only the BIOS sees the raw capacity of the drive, and that can even bee off by a few bytes due to the translation that takes place. You could see this in the older BIOS before Auto was common place. So 149gb is the usable capacity of your drive.
