Hi,

I have a Windows 2000 Server with the following entries on the DNS tab:

192.168.1.1 (internal)
192.168.1.2 (internal)
194.74.89.11 (external)

NOTE: I have made these IP’s up for this example.

The server uses the external DNS entry for Internet access. This works fine for a while but then all of a sudden the external access will stop. I go to the DNS tab and all the entries are the same as above but it simply isn’t using it meaning I can no longer access the Internet.

I have found a quick fix. I remove the entry for external DNS and then add it back in again and works fine for a while.

NOTE: This server has Terminal Services installed in multi user mode, I don’t know if this is a factor or not?

Any ideas what I can do to overcome this?

Thanks.

Gavin.

assuming you have an internal DNS, I would use the internal DNS and don't add the ISP DNS. This troubleshooting may help,

Do you have forwarders configured on your server? If not, toss the isp's dns in there...

Have you checked the event logs to see if anything odd is happening? Also, which order do you have them in? Use internals first, then externals. Here's why. Have all clients use only the internal servers. If a user goes to a new website, they will go to the internal server. If the server doesn't have the site in cache, it will go to the external dns for name resolution. Once it has that site in cache, when the client goes back to that site, they will get there faster because the site is in cache locally.

Hi,

Ok to follow this up with all of you:

1) I need external DNS as the server needs to get AV update from the Internet.

2) Can you tell me where I can locate forwarders to check this?

3) I have internal first and then externals in my DNS list.

4) Registration of the DNS record '53d29222-1fc0-480d-81e8-648aeb08ccfe._msdcs.lawlabs.local. 600 IN CNAME lawlabsh.lawlabs.local.' failed with the following error:
DNS RR set that ought to exist, does not exist.

More suggestions please!

Under the DNS snapin, right click your server name and click the forwarders tab. Enter dns IP's there.

Run nslookup on your server as well as a few of the workstations too...
