External Cd Rom Drive

Will an XP professional CD boot off an External CD/CDR-W drive, does anyone know????. as the cd rom in my laptop is stuffed and i am soon to install XP professional on it. will this be possible

Do you currently have a network card? One way around it would be to copy the installation files from the cd drive of another computer via a network, u need the i386 folder off the cd, then use a win98 bootdisk (make sure your run smartdrive type smartdrv at the prompt after bootdisk has loaded) Then go to where you copied the i386 folder and type winnt and enter, this will kick off the install, will take longer cos it will copy files it needs to use to a portion of you hard disk then fire off the setup!
