have (2) linksys (NEW) RV042 routers with VPN. All data works fine (routers don't limit traffic via VPN. I noticed a couple of posts that had no problems however I continue to have the same issue with a 5610SW that always says "Extension in use # to register". The telephone will refuse to do anything else and the monitor log shows "cause=18 no user responding . . . "ALl of my data traffic works fine with no issues. Softphone works great as well. The hardphone continues to be an issue.

Delete the user and extension. Enable "auto create extension" in the system>gateway tab and reboot the switch. Then allow the phone to create the user for you. Then use Manager to finish your user's button programing and such.

I highly suggest that you turn off "auto create extension" when you are done.

I deleted the extension and autocreate has always been enabled. I have rebooted the system many times and the extension immediately gets auto created however still says Extension in use!!

When it says "extension in use" just enter the extension press #, it will then say "log off user" (or something along these lines) press # for yes, enter the password and the phone should log in fine.

The reason you are getting this message, is beacause that extension number is already been assigned. Assign a new extension, or delete the old extension. This should solve the problem.

I am having a sim problem.

I have deleted the ext, enabled auto-create, rebooted, and logged in with the ext. NOw I don't get the 'Ext in use...' but a blank screen. The VPN is fine, all traffice both ways is unrestricted. Can ping back and forth. Its a netscreen 25 to a Netscreen 5GT setup.

Monitor shows the endpoint registered, and with the right ext. But nothing on the display, etc. The 5610 buttons work and make noises, but i get no dial or display.

Hello everybody,

the issue you describe is well known.
This is due to the VPN.

1-Do you have the same problem if you connect the same phone directly to the same physical LAN of the IP Office ?

If not, the prob is cause of the VPN...

I've experienced this issue with lot of VPN routers : LinkSYS, Netasq, etc...
After analysis, it appears that the TCP and UDP sessions through a VPN have a time to live which is negociated by the router.
Generally the setting of this time to live is integrated in the firwall parameters (for exemple with netasq).
BURLYMAN, could you tell me if the 5610 IP Phone works well few minutes (maybe hours) before displaying "Extension in use # to register".
If yes, try to verify if this time is always the same...
If yes, it's the problem of TCP Time to Live

I'll give you more details if it's that

The first time I installed the phone it worked very briefly. I actually made a call but quickly died on me. After that it never worked (even with continued re-boots, deleting the extension, auto-enable, manually configuring, etc.. etc...). It sounds weird but it happened to me using (2) different ISP's at an earlier time as well. This time I am using different Linksys Routers RV042. I noticed in some posts that people are actually using this routers with no problems!! NicolasR - maybe TTL can be modified?

Mine displays the registration message quite frequently. And yes, it worked fine whe I had it directly on the IPO. It is a netscreen setup, which I had working at another site before. Probably just dumb luck that it worked there. MJW

Here is the output from the Monitor program when I register a user that should work fine....

Was this solved? I have CISCO 871 and 4620SW and have the same issue. Please HELP!!!

Not yet, I am bringing in outside help tomorrow to assist w/ this over the netscreen setup. Upgraded to 3.0.69 hoping that might have a fix, but nothing yet.

I upgraded to 3.1(29) and it is working ok now. Just give it some time and extension will come and show up on the phone. Mine started working yesterday.

I heard some bad things about 3.1..... I am wary of the upgrade, but I guess will give ita shot.

But remember, the extesion will not show up on the phone right away. Just let it sit like that for a while. It takes some time. I am not sure how long. It is strange behaviour but it works eventualy. Unregister user if it asks. George

I have done the upgrade, let it sit for a long long time, unregistered, etc. Still no dice. I'm not really seeing any h.323 traffic in our netscreen logs between the sites, or in the Monitor program... thoughts for the hopeless? :)

I'm still using the RV042 (Linksys Routers) and still no luck. Both have latest firmware and I upgraded the IPO to 3.1 about 3 weeks ago. I saw that some users had mentioned using the Linksys RV042 but I have no idea how in the world it can work!!!!!!!!!! It was mentioned to me a long while back that the Linksys product does supports H.323 V1 and Avaya clearly states that it needs to support V2 and up. This was directly from T3 support form Avaya but have not confirmed with Linksys

I am not sure what to tell you. I have CISCO871 and no problems. What is the port that you used on your phone? it should be 1719 I believe.

I forgot to tell you that once you have the tunnel going between the home router and main router, you can't realy see the trafic that is encapsulated by the tunnel. I am not sure what kind of a logging you have but you should see the connection between two peers. Can you ping your Call Server and your File Server and how did you set this up in your phone?
