I have a customer that has taken over the building next door to them, just across a tarmac parking lot ( about 50 feet). So instead of running a multipair underground cable with lightning protection i would like to extend a 0x16 station module to the new building so i guess the questions are:-
Q1) Are the fibre connectors on the fibre MICS expansion units the regular SC type?
Q2) Would the fibre be the multimode type? if not what fibre type would i need to use?
Q3) The data also needs to go to the new building so i,m thinking that i can use the same fibre cable run if the MICS fibre is multimode,on a different Tx Rx pair of course?

Are we talking MCK type extenders or can you suggest something else as the fibre run from the MICS to the proposed 0x16 location is only going to be 150feet??

Does anyone know know what is the maximum distance from a fibre MICS expansion cartridge to a 0x16 station module

Best to get a MCK extender.I doubt that the fiber that comes with the 16 port station module is extenable. The mck norstar extenders are easy to install, the only promblem is if you have a power outage you have to reset them.To put it simply you sould have a ups on both ends. The mck extenders take the fiber out of the mics and coverts it to a 62.5 mm or 50 mm st multimode fiber. This is at both ends. You can always buy sc to st patch cables if you don't like the st type connectors.

For some reason, 10 meters comes to mind as the maximum distance between the main KSU and an expansion. I don't have a book handy though. MCK extenders are the way to go.

The (MCK Module EXTender) is made for this job. It will ehtend a station module as far as 1.9 miles from the ksu over a multi mode fiber cable with (S-T)ends.

Keep in mind- if your cust. wants to move a fax to the new bldg, without a copper tie, they'll have to call the CO. If they end up needing a 17th set over there, and they've got plenty of open ports on the KSU, they'll still have to install another sta mod and extender. (and have available strands)

I do love fiber extenders, but I've said it before- they don't provide nearly the flexibility of a run of the mill 25pr feed. I still only use them when distance prohibits copper.

Also- make sure the strands you run are multi-mode, and you get dB loss test results for them.

Thanks for the input, i went with the fibre for the network and a 25 pair for the voice, with lightning protect.

remember nortel never supported off premise extension.Once you leave on copper the voltage it takes to blow a phone or a port is far lower than fused protectors..believe 45v protectors...found protectors allways good phone and /or ports blown..for fuses ment to protect those digital phones would run about 75.00 per station would need one on switch side and 1 on station side

Sneak current protectors- designed for use on a standard split-50 66 block- are less than 10 bucks per pair, and are designed with a lower blow threshold than gas tube protectors. I don't recall who our supplier is for them- I think Anixter.
