Extend Partition??

I have a windows 2000 server that I inherited with my new job. The primary disk is 36GB with a 6 GB c: partition and a 32 GB unused partition. The c: partition is full and I want to extend it use the 32 GB unused partition. When I go to disk management to extend it, I get an error: the volume was originally a basic disk and can not be extended.

How can I extend my c: partition to use the full 36GB?

To extend a volume the disk first needs to be dynamic. You can right click the disk to upgrade it to dynamic, however you need to realise that you cannot revert back to a basic disk once you have done this.

Being that you only have one drive, it may be overkill to upgrade it to dynamic; in your case I would either look at using something like ServerMagic to resize your partition or (my favorite) use Symantec Ghost to take an image of the box, and then load the image back on, resizing the partitions in the process.

Remember, whatever you do, do a full backup first - and don't be tempted to try out tools like Partition Magic instead of getting the correct version for server.

If this is the System partition, you will not be able to extend it whatsoever.

Like Terrywilson said... If you have a 3rd party imaging tool/partition tool, (i.e. Symantec Ghost rocks), you can rebuild the partion to span the whole disk, otherwise it cannot be done.
