export DISPLAY

Does anyone know of what is required to make this work....

I have Exceed 7.1 installed on the windows box I want the linux desktop to display.

I start exceed and then ssh into the linux box and issue the command:

DISPLAY=204.4.246.105:0.0; export DISPLAY

Then type "startx"

But I get the error:

Fatal server error:
PAM authentication failed, cannot start X server.
Perhaps you do not have console ownership?


I know this can work but I must be missing something.

You can not use startx to start the remote session on your windows station.

Start with xterm or gnome.

/usr/X11R6/bin/xterm -fn 6x13 -sb -ls -display $(LOCALIP):0

for xterm

gnome-session

for a gnome desktop
