When working in any application with IE closed an illegal programme operation window appears; EXPLORER. This programme performed an illegal opperation and will be shut down. Details show an invalid page fault in Kernel 32.DLL.
When the error box is closed the PC appears to continue to run ok but there is some odd stuff like delays in creating new folders. As far as I am aware no major changes to the PC were made before this problem except the instalation and use of sonic My DVD. the fact that IE is not running when the error happens is a bit strange. I am ruuning zone Alarm and norton. Any help would be most welcome, thanks folks.

1. The Windows Explorer is meant, not the IE.
2. Do you have the same problem with the firewall disabled?
3. Which kind of Windows do you run?

Something else, I have disabled my firewall but the problem still happens, the error box appears at random periods but can is more likley when I have a number of applications open. I have also noted that when I close the Kernal32 DLL error report I loose most of the icons on the explorer tool bar. Hope this may help in providing a solution.

Start > RUn MSCONFIG
Disable all in Startup tab except Scan Registry
work a while see if it probs still occurs....you'll now be opening apps when you call for them, not at startup (possibly too many)
Also may need more RAM...how much ya got?
Sounds like not enough mem.

Could boot to a command prompt using the Win98 startup menu , by pressing and HOLD the CTRL key at the end of POST when booting and choose Command Prompt Only, then (hit enter after each line, from the C:\ prompt)
CD WINDOWS
DEL ShellIconCache

booting into Safe mode will do the same (create a new shelliconcache

Thanks, I have 512mb of DDR RAM, but have loads of apps on start up. Will try reducing as suggested. Interestingly this problem only started after instalation of Power DVD and Pinnacle Studio 9. I will run as suggested and monitor results, thanks.

OK
When using MSCONFIG deselect all exceptt ScanRegistry, don't go online if you disable Firewall and/or AV software...then work awhile and Add a check in MSCONFIG to each (requires restart- one at a time, then work for awhile and so on, you get the pic. You're tying to isolate the app causing the issue..
Now , since you've installed those software proggies, if the probs still occur (especially if you "open" and "work" with these 2 apps, even though their startups are disabled at bootup)...it's possible 1 or both apps are causing the issue.

So, I'd Uninstall each, one at a time -work awhile- to see if it was that particular one. It's possible when installing either app (I haven't used either, but heard some probs with others using Pinnacle9), that "it" installed some Internet component, that wants to "connect" to home, so to speak,...and just maybe , this feature itself could be avoided, during an "Custom" installation by picking and choosing only the components you want during installation (available on some apps).
