I get this error every time I try to open a folder, access my C: drive, use the Search option, use the run option, and open programs with my start menu. After I click 'Close' explorer.exe seems to refresh itself and return to normal. I have scanned for viruses/adware/spyware/trojans with Norton Anti-Virus and Windows Defender. I have repaired my registry files. I have deleted temporary internet files. I'm out of ideas.

DDriveMissing.jpg

My D: Drive has seemed to vanish also. I get this message when I try to use the Run and Search options.

I am really frustrated with these problems and I would be extremely greatful if anyone has any idea what might cause them. All help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
ClayFish

Maybe due to file corruption or possible registry entries are not correct. I have never seen explorer crash with that specific screen. If you boot the system in safemode do you get the same error? Can you see your D: in the Bios? Possible the D: cable is lose if you cant? If you can see D: in BIOS then once you get in windows check your system information and see if it is listed there. Let me know Ill see if i can help you further. The Explorer issue is a little more complicated I dont have an difinitive answer on that issue.

I'm not exactly an 'expert' with computers and computer related terms. If you could tell me exactly how to find this "BIOS" place you speak of, I can check. Thank you for the input, and I'm sorry I have to ask you to explain further, but your help will be appreciated.

Well you dont really want to mess around with the BIOS, but if you want to give it a go depending on your motherboard, when you turn on your computer you hit f1 f2 or delete usually to get into it. Once you get in just check what needs to be checked. Dont be changing anything or you will have serious issues. See if that helps and let me know.

Ok, I'll see if I can find the D: drive in the bios. Thanks.

By the way, I fell really stupid for asking this. But, do you have any idea where the d: cable would be located?

I would suggest you take your computer to someone with some background knowlegde about computer hardware to check that issue. You have to open up the PC and check inside for the cables.

Have a look at the ShelExView program mentioned here.

Troubleshooting Windows Explorer Errors

Explorer.exe repeatedly quits unexpectedly in Windows XP

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?). Do you have the problem in Normal Mode but as a different user?

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes. Or load the Recovery Console and run ChkDsk /r.

How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP

Try the Disk Cleanup and Defragging tools.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

HOW TO: Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Wow. Linney, the ShellExView program fixed my explorer.exe problems, thank you so much.

Now, all I have to do is fix my d: drive problem and I'll be satisfied.

This site is amazing, I didn't think everyone would be so helpful, thank you.

I checked the BIOS for the D: Drive, and it is there. But, it doesn't respond when I put a CD-ROM into the disc tray. I can't figure out why.

I take it D: is a CD-ROM drive. Sometimes if you remove the drive (uninstall it) from the Device Manager and then reboot to let Windows rediscover the drive this brings it back.

Also very often other CD software mess up registry keys causing you to lose a drive, have a read of this and try the suggested fix, but do back up any keys you delete (use the Export function from the RegEdit menu).

CD-ROM Access Is Missing and Messages Cite Error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19, or Code 39 After You Remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP

The Device Manager says that the only disc drive I have is SAMSUNG SV4002H. Is that what you're saying I should uninstall.

when I put a CD-ROM into the disc tray" This is the one I am suggesting you uninstall from Device Manager. Is your CD-ROM listed there under DVD/CD-ROM drives. Don't do anything with those which are listed under Disk drives, they will be your hard drives.

If there is no DVD/CD-ROM drives listed in Device Manager or in My Computer, then try the fix mentioned in

Hmmm! my concerns is not so much the excellent fixes above. But, why did this happen in the first place and will it happen again?

if you have another CD drive try that in place of the one that is currently not working. CD drives die and when they do O'boy do they like to drag the rest of the system down.

Hardware failure can cause the issues you have. That and power fluctuations can do the same thing.

This really sounds like a component that is dying or dead(such as CD drive). The explorer.exe is a symptom of maybe a bigger problem. the fixes above may only be a temporary fix if it is hardware related
