explorer.exe not releasing file handles

suddenly explorer.exe stopped releasing file handles.
after working for a while, file handles are stacking and im not able to delete or rename folders i accessed before.

process explorer shows them all bound to explorer.exe !?

1. local files, or files on network shares?
2. Any file, or only files with certain extensions like .mpg?

- only folders i think, cant remember it happening to a file without reason
