Explorer.exe Invalid Entry Point Error not found after installing SP2

Right after installing XP SP2, on all the machines I've upgraded thus far: I get the following error after logging in, immediately before the logon script starts:



Explorer.exe entry point not found

The procedure entry point mapSLFix could not be found located in the dynamic link library kernel32.dll


I have found no info on any support sites yet. Anyone run into this problem?

It sounds like a bad image of SP2. Are you using a Full Network download, or using Windows Update? The full Network version seems less troublesome. Are you disabling any antivirus software before installing SP2? You should. Some tips from Microsoft:

In any case:
Start, Run, CMD
sfc /Scannow

(Nothing exciting will happen, but you may be prompted for your XP CD. Restart when it finishes and report back.

Didn't help.

I didn't deactivate antivirus prior to installing SP2. I figured why do it when the automatic update would do it with the antivirus software running. We are running Symantec Corporate Edition 7.6 and 9.0 and PC Anywhere 10.5. I have disabled both of them and have not cleared the problem.

sfc /Scannow - did not resolve the problem. Also, these are XP SR2 machines. It seems that when anyone logs on, the error occurs right after "Loading personal settings" and before the logon script starts.

The entry point in fact does not exist except in Win9x kernels.

As suggested in my first post, you have a device driver or application installed that is mis-identifying the version of the OS that is running. You are making an undocumented Win9x kernel call for some reason.

This could well be malware of some sort.

Let AutoRuns do a scan of your startup entries (be sure to check all View options) and try disabling anything that looks either uncecessary or suspicious.

Using MSCONFIG, I disabled everything. The error still occurred. I will check out Autoruns and see if it helps.

We are having the same problem with a laptop that had SP2 installed last week, we tried to copy shlwapi.dll over from the XP Pro CD to the C:\Windows\system32 folder (copied successfully), but it still came back with that error. That link for Sysinternals is not up, is there anything else to try? Thanks

The best course is to remove SP2 using Recovery Console. This will give you a working machine and the ability to look to startup and other entries for programs that may be causing an issue with the Service Pack:

Give the Sysinternals site a while to come back up; I do not know what site issues they are having. They were up late last night.

The site is up now, we removed SP2 by following that MS link; it worked and now we are running scans on that PC and uninstalling spyware/adware. Looks good - thanks!

You are very welcome.

Service Pack 2 does not like installations on XP machines with issues such as malware.

Here is another option two uninstall SP2 if you are having this problem:
Allow the system to boot normally, when you get the error message click ok and and then press ctrl+alt+del to get the task manager.
When the task manager comes up go to FILE then NEW TASK (RUN) and type appwiz.cpl into the task box and hit enter, you may or may not get further error messages, just click OK if they come up.
At this point the add/remove software control panel should come up. Locate WINDOWS XP HOTFIX - KB03407 and remove it. The system should then reboot.
After the reboot go back into add/remove software control panel and locate WINDOWS XP SERVICE PACK 2 and remove this also.
Once this is done remove all spy/adware from your systme then try XP SP2 again.
So far this has worked on a couple of customers computers that I was not able to get into the recovery console. Good luck and leave a post letting me know if this works for you.
