Intermittent issue with Windows Explorer crashing. This issue effects all P.C's. On approximately 1 reboot in every 6 when you try to access windows explorer by right clicking and selecting explore Windows Explorer window opens up. In the left hand pane My computer and My Network Neightbourhood both appear, with a yellow folder icon next to them (not their usual individual icons).
In the right hand pane there is a torch which continually animates suggesting that the computer is searching for something. No matter how long you leave this window it continues 'searching'. While this is happening the computer remains useable you can open the harddrive by going to start>run>c:, you can open up the cdrom drive using the same method. You can access network neighbourhood and my computer by double clicking on their icons. While you can navigate as normal the explorer window still remains 'searching'. If you try to close the explorer window it crashes the P.C. Sometimes the operation tries to time out and gives you a end task option. This also crashes the P.C. If you try to log off or shutdown the P.C, you again crash it. The only way to get out of the crash is to manually reboot.
Once the crashing problem first appears it tends to occur from that point onwards.
I have rebuilt the P.C as clean with no additional software and managed to recreate the problem. Using WIN98SE.
