I have a folder with movies in it, mostly DivX/Xvid, but when i open it a box pops up with a message saying windows explorer has encountered a problem and explorer closes then reopens, returning me to the desktop. I have gone into safe mode and changed the view from thumbnails to list and rebooted, but when i go back to the folder it is still in thumbnail view and crashes again.

I am running a Athlon XP2800+ Barton, 768mb ram, ati radeon 9500 128mb, creative live 5.1, 200gb and 120 gb hd., msi dvd-+rw, aopen cdrw, copperjet usb adsl. also have mcafee firewall and antivirus 2004 home editions. Windows XP Pro (inc sp1 and all latest updates).

If it annoys Microsoft then it's worth doing, and doing well!!

Start, Run regedit

delete this key from registry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32

Avoid using DivX5.04 or 03, and use instead DivX 4.12, 5.02 or XviD. There are problems with 5.03/4 unless you have the right codecs.

Select a file - windows stops.
