ip office 10.1

Can we use the yellow cable provided by Avaya to link an expansion on the rear of the ip office ?

· Each external expansion module is supplied with a blue 1 meter (3'3'') expansion interconnect cable. This
cable must be used when connecting to expansion ports on the rear of a control unit.
· When connecting to expansion ports on an IP500 4-Port Expansion card, a yellow 2 meter (6'6") expansion
interconnect cable can be used in place of the standard blue cable. 4 Yellow cables are supplied with the IP500
4-Port Expansion card.

- in what way is that unclear?

The yellow cables are only intended for use with the 4 port expansion cards. While it may work on the rear ports, there isn't any guarantee that you won't have issues. I'd get the correct cable for peace of mind.

In fact the blue cable (I guess the yellow, too but I never had one) is a really cheap Cat5E cable if I remember correctly. So it will probably work with almost every other patch cord. But since it is written so clear I never used another cable.

Always use the magic blue cable provided by Avaya.
BTW it’s a 1 meter cat 5 shielded cable.
Weird things will happen. especially on reboots.
That being said.
I have made lots of money going to locations that had major issues
And all I did was replace their cable with Avaya’s magic cable.

Whilst it will work with another cable - we had a site with poor cabling so couldnt run phones in a certain location, they ran a single cat5E cable from the phone system to the location, put an expansion module on a desk and then ran phones directly from their to the users locations.

Worked for a couple of years until they moved offices.

But for support from Avaya the blue for rear and the yellow for front are the only supported cables.

whilst you ma sometimes get away with is (as per Pepp) we had an occasion where simply using a 3M cable in the same rack caused unpredictable behaviours (mostly worked but phones intermittently did strange things)
that was on 1 412 with DT handsets so things may have improved with newer hardware.

As the official cable is only about GBP10 USD15 which is nothing compared to the cost of the expansion module, why take the risk?

Although the ports are RJ45 they aren't Ethernet which is probably why problems can happen and why they are shielded.

Pepp purely out of interest what version was this on? We tried it around 4.1 and it caused chaos.

not arrogant, just succinct.

The ports in the back a similar to an E1
that is why they don't produce a 32 port expansion module and stop at 30 so that every extension can make a call if need be and there are no shortages on channels to the processor.

I have seen the same "solution" that Pepp mentioned where the IT guys moved the expansion module. The customer was on 8.0 and the expansion module was 2 floors up. Cable was about 100 Ft all in all.
They never had any issues and I refused to touch it when they wanted it moved. I told the IT guys that they can do that but without my help and they can't call in for support should it no longer work.
