Can exmerge really recover messages from a damaged Priv.edb?

While testing this it appears that the Private Information Store service must be started before being able to extract the data, but surely if it is damaged it won't start! and if it would start then you could just connect as normal and pull out the required data.

Am I missing something, or is it just MS's definition of "damaged"?

Thanks
Matt

Correct the IS must be started. Priv.edb must be restored to a non-production server and repaired (isinteg etc). Then individual or corrupted mailboxes can then be exmerged to PSTs.

Why you would want to do this after the database has been repaired and restored to your production server is an interesting question?

It's an interesting question because that's not what exmerge was originally intended for. It's primary purpose was for automating mailbox moves between servers, like in the case of a hardware upgrade where you'd create the same ORG and Site name, along with the same mailbox name. So, IMHO, you guys are right. There's no need to use it in your situation.

So MS article Q265441 is a little misleading! Or it's their interpretation of Damaged!

Cheers guys for clearing this up.
