Hi Hope someone can help...

I have a networked computer on a win2k domain with a faulty NIC built into the motherboard. I have an identical spare machine wich at one point was on the same domain and intend to swap the hardware but retaining the original machines hard drives. Will this be recognised by the DC as the original machine?

all help appreciated.

Sean

Should do so, however you obviusly don't won't have all the new information that you have saved to the file. If it is identical (same M/Board, RAM, all cards in same PCI slots, same AGP card, etc.) then there should be no problem.

AP81,
thanks for your quick response

I didn't think it would be a problem but wanted someone else to reassure me.

Do you think it wwould be a good idea to remove the machine to be replaced from the Domain and ADUC before exchanging hardware and then putting it back onto the domain afterwards?

All of your SID information is on the hard drive. There is nothing (not MAC address or anything else) specific to the other hardware of the computer involved.

Seanwho:
Might be a good idea to remove the computer from the domain. Swap the hard drive then put the machine back into the domain. This way the domain SHOULD pick up the new SID (which includes the MAC address from the NIC, which are supposed to be unique. I've seen 2 NIC's with the same MAC addres, which isn't supposed to happen).

The SID does not include the MAC address.

If you have duplicate MAC addresses you have an ARP problem, but not an authentication issue.
