We are running Exchange 2003 with SP2 on a Windows 2003 Server. The Exchange Information Store crashes on a almost daily basis, usually overnight when the backup is running (Backup Exec).

The messase in the event log is Event Id 1000 with the error: Faulting application store.exe, version 6.5.7638.2

To overcome this problem you can simply restart the Information Store service in Administrative Tools.

The only MS KB articles I have found suggest installing a hotfix or SP2. We are already running SP2.

Any suggestions?

How big is your information store?

Have you considered having BE not backup exchange and instead use NTBackup to backup to file and have BE backup that file?

I hope you find this post helpful.

Does your Exchange box have dual NICs? Are you using one NIC for backups and the other for network access? I've seen issues where using a single NIC for network access and backup access can cause that type of error.

Just a suggestion of the top of my head.

The mailbox store is 18Gb and the public folder store is 24Gb. We are using BE to do the backup because it is easier (I am told) to restore information from BE if there is a problem.

The Exchange box only has one NIC and BE is running locally on that machine.

After posting my question I noticed a warning message from Windows Data Execution Prevention saying it had closed the store. Is this relevant, and should I exclude STORE.EXE from DEP? At the moment I am using the DEP setting of "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select". The information store has an entry but it is not ticked.

Thanks for your replies.

You are at the max size for yoru database. It is probably crashing because it is out of space.

By default SP2 only extends the store size to 18GB but it can be configured to go up to 75GB.

There are many tutorials for upping the limit, here is a link to one.

I hope you find this post helpful.

I have already set the mailbox and public folder sizes to a max of 50Gb using the registry tweak your link refers to. However I will double check that I have done it correctly.

If the store reaches it's max size I would have thought it would dismount rather than cause a fault with STORE.EXE.

I will check the settings. Thanks for the suggestion.

If the store size is set correctly in the registry and you are not out of space, then I would recommned you check the database for errors. My FAQ should help: faq955-5581

I hope you find this post helpful.

Have you set the information store to automatically restart in the services snap in, this could simply be an issue caused by the backup, by setting an automatic restart you should solve it.
