We are currently using a company to scan our email before it hits our Exchange server. This is costly and we are now looking to do this our selves.

What we have in mind is to have a Linux Box running Spam Assassin which sits in front of our Exchange server and then have Exchange get the emails from that box.

So down to what I'd like to know:

Is this the best method?

Are there better programs than Spam Assassin?

How reliable is the filtering/detection?

And really any other advice that can be given!

THANKS

There are 13 in a dozen solutions, all major vendors have their own strong points, and shortcomings.
You should evaluate, check google to find some reviews etc.

Anyone here, including myself, has his or her preferences, depending on the own situation, budget etc., so that is really no help.

If 'something' 'somewhere' gives 'some' error, expect random guesses or no replies at all.

After trying some online antispam services I decided to go with the software solution. I tested and am going to buy Symantec Premium Antispam. It uses the Brightmail technology and seems pretty reliable with very low false positives. I've set it up on Symantec Mail Security for SMTP gateway on a separate server. SMS for SMTP also has some filtering, rules, etc. features. You can try them both for free for 30 days.

I never used any gateway security appliances yet.

good luck,

We use GFI's Mail Essentials. It is a very good program and the pricing model is quite good. It can be run on the server or in gateway mode as you have suggested as your preferred setup. I am running 2 versions behind, but it stills works quite well for us.

Just in case: The GFI just released a totally free version of Exchange/Gateway Antivirus, check it out...

Sam.
