We cannot send email out our Exchange 5.5 server after we changed ISP's and changed the IP address on the Exchange server.
We are able to send email to addresses that we host on our Exchange server and to addresses on our other mail server, which is an Imail server. The Imail server works fine after the change.

I disabled our firewall (Tiny Firewall 5) and tried to send an email, but we still get the following error message returned:

These three email addresses are in fact good, and we have tried other addresses, but if they are not in our network, they fail.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks

My first question would be can you receive emails from outside your domain? i.e. yahoo.com or netscape.com. try this step. This will help you figure out if the the problem is incoming and outgoing emails. As far as the emails you are sending out that are not reaching..open up exchange admin...connections...internet mail service..queue tab.Outbound Messages awaiting delivery. see if the emails that you are sending out are still sitting on the server. Finally have you submitted your MX records to your new ISP. if you have done it recently it takes 24-48 hours for the MX records to be changed by the various DNS servers across the country. hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.

We can receive emails from all outside sources. I forgot to specify that. I opened the internet mail service in exchange admin, and there were no messages awaiting delivery. I tried to send another email and check the queue and there was still nothing. We have submitted our new MX records to our new ISP, and that was more than two weeks ago. Our other mail server (Imail version 8) is working fine, and so are our web servers.

Our DNS is set up this way:
The exchange server has an internal IP address (we use port forwarding to receive our emails). The exchange server points at another internal server for DNS. Our internal DNS server forwards DNS to our ISP dns servers.

Please help.

Go to the event viewer and save the events and clear all the events...once you do that reboot the server..and send out a test message..see if an error message is being logged in..this should help trmendously if an error gets logged.

I didn't reboot, I don't want to disturb the users if I don't have to. I did find the following suspicious message in the event log:

"A new TCP/IP SMTP connection has been made to host xx.xxx.xx.202 (for gmail.com). Logfile: <none> "

I don't think that it should be trying to make a connection to our other mail server for a gmail account. Any ideas how to fix this?

The IP address that it gives is for our other mail server with the iMail. Our exchange server IP is xx.xxx.xx.199 to the external world.

I also found this message in the event log at the same time as the other one:

"The following message could not be delivered to <someone@gmail.com>. The destination server reported: 550 not local host gmail.com, not a gateway From: <someone@hermes.somewhere.net> Subject: testing "

Thank you sooo much vickd!!!

I changed the smtp setting in my iMail server to relay from the exchange server's IP address. We can now send mail through the exchange server.

One question, why is my exchange server relaying through the iMail? Is it because of DNS?

Thanks

You are welcome. When you submitted your MX records to the ISP did you submit your exchange servers ip address as the host for the MX records or your IMail server or both? and also are you hosting 2 different domain names (1 on exchange and 1 on Imail). If you are hosting 2 diffrent domains you should not have to have exchange server relaying through the iMail. This should help explain some of it..

Vick

Here is our situation:

We are hosting about 50 domains on the iMail server. We are hosting our office email on our Exchange Server. I have control of our DNS records through our registrar and I have a DNS server here. I only have an MX record for the iMail server.

Do I need to put in an MX record for the Exchange server so that it doesn't relay through the iMail server?

Thank you very much for your help vickd!
