Hi everyone,
I'm pretty new to exchange server. I've been looking far and wide for some kind of documentation on how to move an exchange 2000 server from one win2k adv server to another. I've been able to find tons of documentation for moving from a 5.5 server to 2000, but hardly any for moving between two 2000 servers. It may be my inexperience keeping me from seeing something simple, but i could really use some help with the process. Thanks,
Matt.

hi,
ty this to move exchange server

If the Exchange server is a member server, then follow this action plan:

1.Stop all Exchange services
2.Copy all mdbdata folders to another server (this has the information store databases_
3.Unplug the server from the network
4.Go into Active Directory users and computers - locate the machine account, right click it and hit "Reset Machine Account" - this opens the secure channel for the machine account in A.D. - it allows you to use the setup /disasterrecover switch later on and saves you alot of hassle.

5. Rebuild the Machine installing all of the patches etc (also using same drive names)..
6. Join the domain back as a member server with the same exact name (it will pickup the account that is already in Active Directory)
7. Run setup for Exchange (using the Standard Edition CD) - but when you run setup, do it from a command prompt and run "setup /disasterrecovery" (this will pickup the Exchange information already in Active Directory so you will not have to re-configure everything)
8. Install the same service pack for Exchange 2000 and patches that you had before
9. Stop the information store service
10. Rename all mdbdata folders
11. Copy the original mdbdata folders back to the appropriate drives and locations
12. Go into Exchange System Manager, at the properties of each data store, go to the database tab and check "this database" can be overwritten by a restore"
13. Start the information store and all remaining services
14. Pop in the Enterprise CD, run setup and choose RE-install

there is a link to mskb on thread181-27567 if you want to keep your existing server name,
or just use the active directory user and computer console to move mailbox

Well, my exact problem is that I am adding a second domain controller to an existing site. We have a lot of storage being used on the first server and are trying to move the mail server from that computer to a new one. We would still like to use the first for storage, etc. Would clustering be an easier method for this? How would one go about doing so?
I've been trying to use the Ed Crowley server move method for exchange 2000, but I've run into problems. I'm a total exchange newbie and I have no idea how to create a second server. Exchange is installed on the second machine and both dc's are labeled as exchange member servers, but i cannot create a second server in which to create a new data store, etc. Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks for all the help so far.
Matt.

To ritut from your message on July 12th.

I'm getting ready to upgrade our current Exchange server (2000) to another machine but need to keep the same name and IP address. Does this method really work? The only thing I don't quite understand is why you have to begin the new install with the Exchange standard CD, and then re-install with the Exchange Enterprise to finish up. (we are currently using Enterprise) Can I not just use the Enterprise from the beginning?

we tried this method yesterday. it took 5 hours. but it succeed.i think you can try by enterprise edition also. but at the end i didn,t reinstall still it is working fine.you need to run domainprep before disasterrecover action

good luck
