lots of email returns, from aol and road runner. Someone says at first glance he thinks my smtp is setup for relay. How do I verify that in exchange server 2000
There are two places where relaying can be allowed in Exchange 2000 server. Both can be found in Exchange system manager. Right click on your Internet connector and select properties. Go to the address space tab. Ensure the check box "Allow messages to be relayed..." is not ticked. The second place is in the properties of the SMTP virtual server. Open the Access tab and click the Relay button. It is best to only allow your own IP addresses to relay across your server. Finally, it is good practice to restrict port 25 on your firewall to only allow your mail server to send outgoing mail and if you use an online virus/spam checking company like MessageLabs, then only allow them access across your firewall for incoming SMTP. Incidentally, if you do use such a service you may need to allow them to relay across your server.
