I am using Exchange 2003 and Outlook 2003. When choosing the option to not deliver a message before a certain date in Outlook, it works fine if Outlook is open. But if outlook is closed and the computer is off then it will not send. I was under the impression in an exchange environment the message would be held and sent from the mailbox level regardless of the client being on or not. But that doesn't seem to be the case. I have read posts regarding earlier editions of Exchange and that the message is added to the MTA's work queue and then sent from there. The only protocol I have done any configuring with is SMTP and I do use an SMTP connector with a smart host to route mail to our gateway. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Are you using the mailbox of the server for email delivery or personal folders (PST) ?

Thanks for the reply. We aren't using pst files . The only folder in outlook is the mailbox folder. When I do choose the option to delay the send and then send the message, it is moved to the outbox. If you have any other thoughts on what to check it is appreciated.

we have had problem with one user:

delayed e-mails won't send.

Problem was:

she edited e-mail whilst it stacks in "outbox" folder.

We asked her to avoid editing of sent e-mails and it works.

Cheers,
Robert

I have the same problem, have you foud a solution? Tried searching everywhere and can't find anything. Thanks

I had forgotten about this issue. Sorry jfmorin I never did find a solution. I only had one user wanting to use the feature and I just told them outlook had to be open. And as often happens I just moved on to more pressing issues.

If you do find a reason/solution please post it I would love to know an answer. Good Luck!

After alot of research I finally found the answer.
For cached exchange mode this behavior is by design here is an explanation from a microsoft post:

This is expected. The problem is that (in cached mode) if the message were to be pushed to the Exchange server you would no longer be able to re-edit it or stop it from being sent without restarting Outlook in online mode. Since many people set up a rule to delay sending all messages by a few minutes (to prevent that "Oh dang! I didn't mean to send that yet!" mistake), we decided that the behavior you're experiencing was the preferred one. If you leave Outlook running, though, it will send the message at the proper time.

I have tried it on an "online" account which does not have the cached mode turned on and it works. The message stays in the outbox, but when you close Outlook is does not say that there is still messages in the outbox. The message gets delivered at the correct time and then goes into the sent items.

Hope that helps.

Very nice! I appreciate you posting it! I think for our purposes I would prefer cached mode and just lose that ability. But it is good to know the reason why. Thanks!
