We are currently having a problem with Outlook 2000 freezing. We are running Exchange 2000. You can open Outlook but within seconds it freezes. It is not all end users just a select few but all settings are the same on the machines. If anyone has an a suggestion it would be gladly accepted.

Thanks
Marc

Hi Marc,

sorry to hear you're having outlook headaches. Your message didn't indicate if the affected users were working before? What errors are being logged at the exchange server if any?

since some of your users are working ok, this may not be an exchange issue. However, if you have more than one store you should check to see if the effected users are all in the same store. If that's not the case verify the basic networking stuff first. Often Outlook issues are really symptoms of network issues or virus infection.

Without more precise info its difficult to give you more definite direction.

Info needed includes
1) were the clients working before and suddenly developed this problem all at the same time?

2)are all user on the same subnet?

3)Have there been any networking changes, such as new switches/router added or config change, changes to dhcp scope definitions, other changes?

4)how many exchange servers, stores, etc

5)event log entries on exchange and client computers?

6)have you tried opening the same mailboxes from different workstations?

If you can provide a little more info I'm sure you'll have other techs responding with suggestions.

I first want to thank you for your help. All clients where working properly and just stopped working. There are both Windows 98, Windows ME and Windows XP. All users are on the same subnet and we only have one server and store. There are no log entries other then usually saying that the person has logged onto their account. I also have tried other workstations. Outlook works correctly on other workstations. We have also tried to uninstall and reinstall Outlook and that has not solved the issue.

Thanks for the help.

There are really only a few server side issues I can think of that would cause the problem. One a corrupt recurring appointment Item issue.

Another would be exccesive cached backlinks, views and searches.

Yet another would be an invalid pr_entryid for the contacts folder.

Drop the OAB service from your profile and readd it.

I want to thank everyone for their help. It turns out in our WINS the connectivity to the Exchange server was released and not active. It took some time to for all e-mails to stop freezing but once they where made active it made everything work properly.

Thanks Again
Marc
