Im just wondering if there is a way on how to protect - like password protected, encrypt - the database of Exchange.. meaning it cant be restored by anyone unless authorized.

The best way to protect the exchange databases is through the use of the exchange admin account. If you are the only one who knows the password, and you lock the server when not at the console, noone should be able to access it.

Well.. The administrator should be the only one that knows how the server is originally configured. Such as Site Names, OU's and Server names .. all of which are Case-Sensitive.

Also - the admin is also the only one that knows what is installed on the machine (SP's, Connectors, ADd-INs) all of which are required in order for a restore to function properly

If joe blow gets a handle on one of your backups and tries to restore without this information - chances are, he'll/she'll be unsuccessful.

When doing a restore, however, new admin accounts and service accounts are created... and can be changed at anytime ... so...

As far as restoring to your own server -- well.. only authorized personell should be allowed where the server sits. and you can set up Backup and Restore accounts so that ONLY those account have the rights to do restores..

But still if someone gets wind of your Exchange Admin services account... well.. that's a breech. Alshrim
