I am looking for a way to backup MS exchange 2000 reliably and inexpensively.

Is there some way to compress/backup the entire data directories of exchange, and put them into one single file on the hard disk which I could then backup to tape?

Also, if I currently use Veritas Backup Exec Server, v 8.6 WITHOUT the exchange option... am I backing up a valid info if i just tag the exchange directory for backup?

ntbackup (inexpensive because it comes with W2k and is exchange-aware)
How to Use Command Line Parameters With the "Ntbackup" Command

all necessary links are provided in this article

reminder: BE8.6 without exchange agent: no valid exchange backup (solution :backup 2 disk first then throw on tape )(when disaster strikes you would prefer having the exchange agent because procedure restoring 2 disk and then restore exchange takes double the time, keep this in mind)

Time wouldn't be an issue really.

Do you know of a way to backup to disk?

ntbackup (run from start, run type ntbackup)
play around with the wizard and then make a commandline backup to schedule it automaticaly

ntbackup /.. /.. /.. /...

time this (2h30 or so)

then start file backup with BE8.6

if you don't bought the exchange agent why have you bought BE for, you don't need it because Ntbackup is fully capable of doing the same... (kinda ;-) )

I am facing the same problem....
I have backup Exec 8.6 but no exchange agent....

Can I use a backup utlity to perform an online backup on my Exchange 2000 server to a file server? How to do that??

Then I will use the veritas to backup that file server..

In this case both exchange server and file server will be backup.....

I usually look at the problem by the ease of the solution.

How easy do you want to restore?

If that question is important to you, I suggest you use Exmerge to back up the mailboxes. It is on the Exchange 2000 CD.

I have a script run an exmerge nightly as well as NTBACKUP to backup the entire store.

nick as said above, you can use ntbackup to backup to disk.
angktwap same answer

rrsub (i love exmerge 2.....;-)

rrsub,

I wonder if you will be interested in sharing your script. That is something I could use in my backup routine.

Thanks,

Javy

Not really that hard. Just 1 line.

Remove the Read Only attribute to Exmerge.ini and setup exmerge.ini to your server specifications. You can use the GUI.

I created a user "exmerge~" to have access to all mailboxes for the process.

Create a BAT file and schedule it.

Here is the line:

runas /user:exchange~ "\"C:\program files\exchsrvr\bin\exmerge -B -D exmerge.ini
