We will be using Symantec Antivirus Filtering 3.0 for MS Exchange in a 2 server frontend/backend configuration.

The frontend will host OWA and also receive incoming SMTP mail. POP and IMAP will not be used, and there will be no outgoing SMTP through this system.

Since the frontend basically forwards all requests to the backend, is there any need to install the Exchange antivirus; will it actually do anything? Because the frontend is accepting inbound SMTP, I do have to mount an information store for NDRs, but it will not contain any mailboxes.

TIA

Sounds like a q for Synmantec. I think you are OK with AV on your backend server only.

I agree, you should only need mailbox virus protection on the server that the actually mailboxes are installed on. You might want to install anti-virus on the front-end server though, just the regular anti-virus not the mail filtering/protection one.

regular antivirus is just okay

don't forget to load iislockdown & urlscan.......

Symantec Antivirus Filtering 3.0 for MS Exchange on a Front-End Server will not do anything since there are no mailboxes on this server. You only install it on the Back-End server.
