exchange and dns

i have an issue where i changed my dns server from root server to normal server and added dns external forwarders-since then my exchange server has been behaving oddly every hour or so useres cant access their folders on exchange if i go to the excahnge box and stop/stat dns client it then works fine for an hour or so??
any help much appreciated
