on the exchange server? is it on by default? what would i need it for? how do i turn it off? why does it need dhcp? what is it using all those addresses for?
i have no remote access to this server (no OWA or anything from the outside). it only receives smtp in from the internet and sends smtp out to a smarthost, which then forwards mail out to the internet.
i've stopped the Remote Access Connection and the Routing and Remote Access services. i can send mail out, and can receive mail in.
so, out of curiosity, what does RAS do in an exchange server?
It doesn't do anything for Exchange. It service should not have been started. The RRAS service is disabled by default. Someone must have configured it using the RRAS MMC.
