On Microsoft's web site, I have read two whitepapers concerning the subject of moving Exchange 5.5 to a Win2K server. The first states that Exchange 5.5 cannot be installed onto a Win2K Domain controller if there is more than one domain controller in the domain. The second does not state that point, but merely says that if the Win2K server is a domain controller or a backup domain controller, then due to the resources being used, exchange may perform sluggishly.

Which one is correct? Can I or can I not use a Win2K domain controller to install Exchange 5.5?

Thanks in advance.

Try very hard to avoid putting Exchange on a domain controller (NT4.0 or Win2K doesn't matter.) Exchange will eat every bit of resources possible, and since your clients connections to the Exchange server is pretty much constant the server will not see these connections diconnecting until the end of the day. This is the same way the DC operates, client connections constant and not disconnecting until the end of the day. This can seriously load a server.

I have four win2k DC's, one of which runs exchange 5.5 without any problems. I think the issue is how many users/how hard you drive your systems. mine only has 30 users/mailboxes and win2k/exchange 5.5 deals with this very well (server in question is HP XU, 2xPPro200, 256Mb)
it doesn't run any other network services though (DNS, WINS, DHCP etc)

hope this helps

You need to change LDAP port (LDAP Site Default is easiest)for Exchange to 390 if it is on Win2k DC and it runs fine. Dan
