I am running Exchange 5.5 with a pop connector to my ISP, I would like to route all outgoing SMTP mail through the same ISP for delivery to external domains. how can I go about setting this up.

My ISP requires an authenticated username and password

Exchange runs best wehn used with a proper SMTP message feed - that's the way it is designed. Otherwise you have mail deliver issues.

If you insist on running a regular ISP account for your Exchange server, you need to coinfigure a DUN connector to authenticate to your ISP account, and set the IMS to use the approriate connector in its Dialup Connections tab.

Thanks zbnet,

Can you point me to connector? I have done a search but only found POP3 connectors for retrieving mail.

In Exchange Administrator, go to File, New Other, Internet Mail Service. This handles all outgoing mail to external systems.

mindwaves, I suggest you have a look at - this is very comprehensive on all the issues of setting up an IMS. This site also has a section on Exchange-friendly ISPs, people who are familiar with setting up an ISP feed that will send SMTP messages to your Exchange IMS.
