I have a 2003 AD Server.

Have w/2000 server installed w/exchange server 5.5 running on it and its on the NT domain.

I want exchange 5.5 server to work with 2003.

In order for exchange 5.5 to work w/2003 AD, what would i need to do? Would it work/or not?

I have to install the AD Connector where the exchange server 5.5 is installed or the 2003 server?

Exchange 5.5 would i be able to point the primary account to the 2003 servers where the AD a/c's are?

You need to get the documents, and have a good read of all this - step in without adequate preparation, and you'll likely mess it all up big-time.

The ADC can go on any server in the domain - some people think it's best to locate it on a 2003 DC. You configure a Connection Agreement per Exchange 5.5 site. for more details.

I'm not sure I understand your last question.

I inherited the following setup:

Exch 5.5 on a Win2Ksp4 box.
Two Win2Ksp4 domain controllers.

I don't know how AD connector was installed when the domain was upgraded from NT to Win2K AD, but I thought I would share the following.

I just upgraded AD domain controllers from Win2K to Win2003. I tested the upgrade in an offline version of my network first and it worked. So I did the upgrade last week. I did not change AD connector.

Exch 5.5, Outlook Web Access, and my blackberry server are all working fine with AD 2003. Now I will start the project of upgrading 5.5 to 2003.

The upgrade turned out to be quite easy:

1. I moved all FSMO roles to one domain controller DM-1 (except Global Catalog)

2. I enabled Schema updates on the DM-1 controller - KB285172

3. I used the domain administrator account. I made sure this account had Service Acct Permissions in Exchange 5.5 Site, Organization, and Configuration containers.

4. Uninstall administrative tools from DM-1.

5. Back up both domain controllers. Set DNS on Email servers, OWA, and blackberry to point at DM-2 as first DNS choice.

6. Inserted Win03sp1 cdrom into DM-1 and ran D:\i386\adprep /forestprep in a dos window (took about 10 min)

7. Waited 30 min and ran D:\i386\adprep /domainprep (took 1 min)

8. Waited 30 min and reinserted the cdrom and used the install wizard to UPGRADE the DM-1 to 2003 (to about 45 min)

(DM-2 was servicing the domain while this was going on, no problem)

9. Did not upgrade to service pack 2 yet, but did install about 40 windows updates and everything still worked.

10. Upgraded DM-2 using the cdrom.

11. Cleaned up a few warning events like DHCP had to be "authorized", and the time server had to be set up again.

Later I will demote DM-2 and then replace it with a clean 03 installed box. Then move fsmo rolls and dhcp to DM-2 and replace DM-1 with a clean 03 install also.

I assume when I upgrade to Exch03 I will need to upgrade the AD connector version too.

Cheers
