exchange 2k bogs down after 2 days or so

Our hardware is robust...1gb ram 2.0xeon, 10k drives, but lately after a day or 2, the server just bogs down. perf mon shows too much disk reads and writes, but our serveraid logs show things are ok. also it seems we accumulate too may 1000's of connections in the exch sys mgr connections screen. We have only 40 or so users with an info store that is less than 7gb. OWA is in use as well. Any ideas?

Have you checked for open relays? Check your outgoing queues in system manager, are they filling up?

I'd have to agree. You're either an open relay or getting spammed heavily.

we do get alot of spam.....alot, and have a filter in place, (GFI mail essentials) which is running on the exchange server. i just found a patch for it for a memory leak...that could be it....but all the connections still bother me...they go on all day and night, several per minute...many oledb. I dont think we are open relay, but going to check again....any other ideas?
