Exchange 2007 Enterprise on a Win2K3 Standard, am I toast? 2

Helping out a friend of mine that had someone install Exchange 2007 Ent. on a Win2K3 R2 Std. server. Is there any reason besides clustering in the future to have the Ent. OS on the box and if so, is a in-place upgrade even possible with Exchange already installed?

Well, since it sounds like you already have Exchange on the box, you couldn't cluster in the future anyways. Clustering must be done during the initial installation - not after the fact.

So as long as he stays with just the one box, he should be ok, right?

It doesn't matter. You could have 50 Exchange servers, all running the Standard version of Windows 2003. In Exchange, the biggest reason to use Enterprise is for clustering.

Ok, thanks... I think maybe there was something to do with journalling as the reason they had done a enterprise install.

Note that there is a difference between the enterprise VERSION and enterprise CALs. You can buy enterprise CALs to enable certain features like mailbox management, ForeFront, UM and some journaling capabilities without installing Exchange Enterprise edition. Enterprise edition is primarily about capacity and clustering.

If you've installed Enterprise edition, you'll still have to purchase Enterprise CALs to enable the Enterprise features, but you could have used those CALS with Standard edition for the same effect.

And, adding to what Dave said, the Enterprise CALs are add-on CALs to the standard CAL. You have to have both in order to get all the features.
