We have Exchange 2003 Standard and when I went to installed SP2 on it today, it gave me the error "An error occurred while copying file setupmcl.exe. Cannot copy file to destination directory."

I then continued the install and it failed, saying that there was an Access Denied error on the Win32 facility, and then I think something like c0070005 (although that is from memory, so that could be wrong).

Any ideas on how to fix this? We very much need this on ASAP due to us getting very close to the 16GB limit.

When I tried to install it, it continued with the process, then added that it had errors (as related above), and then I closed it.

Checking the version number, it indicates that SP2 wasn't installed.

But now I am seeing that OWA no longer works - so it makes me think that some parts of it were put into place, and they have no broken some of the functionality.

That is fine if the functionality it added includes the increased allowance for the message store, and that I can get OWA back.

The issue with OWA is that when you go to login, after a successful login, it shows the two Outlook screens (the left and right navigation panes), but then inside of those screens is a new login screen.

It appears that in IIS, there is a folder under ExchWeb that has the default version number, with folders in there - and now there is one with the post SP2 version number, but nothing in there.

So it makes me wonder if something got set to redirect into that new folder, but then no files were moved in there?

Yes - you got bombed part way through the install. Download a new copy of SP2 and reinstall it.

got bombed"?

On a side note, in reference to the errors it gave me during the install, a search on those indicated that a registry permissions issue was the cause (although it didn't say with SP2, it was with another issue, but the error was similar enough I thought I would give it a try).

One suggestion was to wipe out that registry error, so I backed it up, killed it, restarted for good measure, tried the install again, and no luck.
So I put it back in, restarted for good measure, and then tried again - no luck.
I adjusted the permissions as they suggested, still no luck.

I am currently downloading SP2 again as you are suggesting, but I am confused as to how this would help. Since it is a compressed file, I would be surprised if something in the data could get corrupted, yet still pass the checksums during the decompression stages.
But I will give it a shot.

Make sure that the ID you are using to do the install is listed as an Exchange Full Admin and also a local admin on the server.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Okay, I downloaded the file again and just as I suspected, same issue again.

Also, I am doing this as admin, which has full admin rights on the network, this machine, and everything else.

No clue why it is doing this.

It has broken our OWA and I don't know if the store size limit is raised or not. Perfect.

Okay, yeah, that was a lot of fun too - but after following that kb article (883380), I still have the same issue. There is also still a directory (empty) in the Exchweb directory that has the SP2 version number in it, and it also still has the normal version number there. The former has no files in it, the latter does.

I am assuming that this issue is due to the SP2 process not completing whatever it needed to do with that directory, so it is pointing to it after login, but then there is nothing there, so you get the login screen again.

So yeah, still not working at all.

You may need to reinstall Exchange on top of the existing install and choose to reinstall the OWA components. I would remove the entries you see for the failed SP2 prior to doing that.

I would then try reapplying SP2 after the reinstall to make sure you don't have any file regression problems if there are any SP2 files still on your system.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

I ended up doing the following:
1) dismount the public and private store

2) stop the exchange and iis services

3) copying the store directory to another drive and renaming it

4) reinstalling IIS and exchange

5) reapplying SP2 (it worked this time)

6) deleting the new store directory from the reinstall and then moving the old one back in and renaming it to the proper name

7) started up the exchange and iis services again and made sure both stores were mounted

8) recreated a ssl cert and applied that

9) did a full backup

Now it is all working again and I have made the registry change for the full 75GB of store space and things appear to be content for now.
