exchange 2003 NT backup failing

Hi,
I am having trouble with my exchange 2003 NT Backup. The backup has been running fine for months, but now for the past few days when I run an online NTBackup it brings down exchange(no one can access email anylonger). I have tried to run the job during the night, but in the morning the same thing, no one can get to email. I have a very large database 120gig, yes 120gig, and I am backing up to another server on the network via a UNC path...
I am getting no errors in the event logs and have no idea what to do next... any guidance would be appreciated.

Check the database for errors. faq955-5581

I would also suggest that you create multiple databases since you are using Enterprise and that way you could deal with smaller backups and faster restores if needed.

Have you tried turning on diagnostic logging on the ExchangeStore using System Manager? I would think there would have to be some sort of events being generated there when things go offline.
