We are currently in the process of migrating from exchange 2000 to 2003 on new hardware. I have migrated one mailbox which is able to receive incoming mail from the internet, still be received by our exchange 2000 server which routes it to the new 2003 server, however if the user who's mailbox has been migratd attempts to send outbound mail, it sits in the queue of the 2003 server, why is this?

Because you haven't configured the 2003 server to route mail outbound yet? Have you configured the Virtual SMTP server on the 2003 server yet? Or configured it to route outbound mail through the 2000 server? Either way, it seems like you haven't set the 2003 server up to get mail out of its queues. Outbound mail shouldn't need to go back to the 2000 server for that user.

Ok so your saying I need to configure a virtual smpt server on the 2003 server? Is there an MS KB article on how to do this? I still want the 2000 server to handle outbound mail routing until I've moved all the users over to the 2003 server don't I?

AM

If you still want the 2000 server to handle outbound, then you'll want to tell the 2003 server (in the SMTP Connector properties) to forward all mail through the connector to a smart host, and designate the 2000 server as the smart host.

I think that if the 2000 server is set to allow relaying from the 2003 server (by IP?) you should be OK.

Ok so in the outbound properties of the SMTP connector on the 2003 server I will put in the internal IP of the 2000 server as a smarthost for mail, that way the 2003 server should route outgoing mail to the 2000 server.

I have not specifically done anything with the relaying properties on the 2000 server, do I have to, to allow it to relay mail from the 2003 server, is this necessary for incoming or outgoing or both?

AM

It might not be necessary to configure anything, but if you do need to change something, it would be in the Access tab, in the Relay area. I would add the IP of the 2003 server in there in the relay list.

It only matters for mail that's outbound, originating from an account on the 2003 server. And again, assuming the two servers exist in the same organization, there may not be any configuration necessary. Maybe someone else can say for sure.

Well I can tell you for sure its not working, we haven't changed anything since we brought the 2003 server online and installed exchange 2003, we moved one mailbox and sent some test message and they are stuck in the queue. I'll try the relay and see how that works, failing that you think the smtp connector is the answer?
