Have have 2 new Dell's running XP in a 10baseT network with W2K advanced server. All the communications seem fine other than when the XP machines are attached to the network they produce excessive network traffic to the point I'm getting collisions every couple of seconds, even when sitting idle.

When I disconnect them the collisions go away and the network runs normally. I have 10 other Win9X machines running on the network just fine. Only the XP's are causing the problems.

What protocols are running on the net?
Any netbui or ipx? Glenn

I'm running TCP/IP with the W2K server acting as a DHCP server with IP's in a 10.10.x.x subnet.

Thanks in advance for the help

Are you running DNS internally? Try giving the XP machines static DNS entries. Also, try giving the machines static IPs. Are the nics in the XP machines set to auto negotiate or are they forced to 10MB? If they are set to auto, try forcing them. Anything in the event logs of the XP machines?

I haven't check the event logs. I'll have to do that Monday.
Thanks for the ideas I'll post here and let you know if it helps

On the DNS numbers...are you pointing back to your server or to your router (if you are using one)? Point to the server. Just leave the router gateway.

Also, if you are on a router, make sure the server DNS points to the server IP. Glenn
