When I open an existing file and try to "save as", I get a message that states "A file named [filename.xls] already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it?" This message appears just after clicking "save as".
When I click on the save icon or save from the file menu, I do not get any message, and the file is not saved!
everything else seems to work fine.
I have tried to unload and reload MS Office several times. This is on a co-workers machine and it has me completely stumped. X-) Help!

jhimes,

try to delete Excel profile. for example win2k ; c:\document and settings\userid\application data\Microsoft\Excel folder.

and, let me know if it worked.

doldol,

Thanks, I tried it but to no avail. The problem persists!

are the other office "Save as..." all ok?
if it is not, windows problem.
If it is, only the excel problem. Now in case it is the only excel problem,

Try these ;

- View -> Toolbars -> Customize...
Find Commands tab and "File". -> You can see "Save As..." as one of the menus. Right click your mouse button -> Drag it to File in Menubar. you will see your mouse pointer is + mark and ready to paste the commend.
Drag down in File menu and leave your mouse button near "Save As...". Now there are two "Save As..." Delete the old "save as..." dragging it to inside [Customize] box and close the [Customize] dialogue box.
Now try this new "Save As....".

- if it doesn't work,
log on as other user, and try the commend if there is the same error.
1) In case other user don't have, try this ;
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\OFFICE
office2000 -> 9.0
officexp->10.0
\EXCEL"
delete the folder, close regedit and relaunch excel.

2) in case other user also have ;
you can try Excel Help -> Detect and repairs or Remove office program and reinstall in control panel.

doldol,

Thanks again. I tried your suggestions and they were not successfull. However, not because they did not work, but because I chould not carry out the steps. I can not customize the toolbar. So now I have a completly different problem. Obviously I need to reinstall Excell; but I have uninstalled and reinstalled MS-Office several times without repairing the problem.

How do I make sure I have COMPLETELY removed Excell before I reinstall? I'm sure that will solve this anomaly.

Thanks

Control -> Add/Remove Programs -> Microsoft office Remove.

Go to the above regedit, and delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\.....\Office Folder

And also go to ;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\OFFCE Delete it!
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Windows\Current Version\Uninstall\{000000409-78E1-11D2-B60F-006097C998E7}

Confirm that, {00000 .....97C998E7} display name is Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Premium and if your version is not, 2000 SR-1, the key number might be different.

If this is the case(different version), look for a key which is the exactly same "DisplayName"

And also using Find, you can delete other HKEYs, but, this would be enough.
Reinstall.

Let me know the result.
