I have a PC running Win98se and Office 2000, when you try to start Excel or open an xls file you get the error:

Excel Caused an invalid page fault in module MS09.dll at 016F-308e0522;
I have tried reinstalling Office 2000 and ran the SFC file checker in Windows 98, but still Excel will not work, can anybody suggest a fix for this,
Thanks for your help

Thanks for the reply,
I have done as suggested in Q306400, but the problem is still there, also I get a message when re-installing Office;
error in module c:\Program files\common files\OLEDB \MSDAORA.dll failed to register..the same error appears for c:\Windows\system\MSRCLR40.dll
It seems like dll hell, I have carried out all the other steps like running a virus check, removing office, using the Eraser utility and so on

Ok. Go to Start, Run, type in 'sfc' -- without the tic marks-- and run System File Checker.

Whoops...you did that...still looking....

I Tried, but it just did not work, my next step would have been to wipe and reinstall the OS and applications from scratch, but first I tried updating to Office XP Pro, this solved the problem, it proved at least that there is no hardware fault,
Thanks for all your help Carr

See if any of these help. Bloated xlb file is usually a favourite fix so try that first - See below for info.

Try opening Excel without any addins or hidden workbooks:

Start, Run,
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\Excel.exe" /Automation

Quotes mandatory, Note you may have to change the path.

If your error disappears, there is either an add-in or a
(hidden) workbook that is loaded upon XL's start, which
bothers you.

- Try locating the XLSTART directory, move everything from
there.
- In XL: Tools, Addins, note the ones checked and uncheck
them one at the time, each time restarting XL
- In XL, Tools, options, general. Check if a path is
entered after "Alternate startup file location". Clear it.

Another option is to open XL in Safe mode:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /Safe

Also, you might try:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\Excel.exe" /Regserver

Yet another possible problem is a corruption of your
toolbar customisation file. Locate all files with
extension .xlb and rename the extension(s) to something
like .old
Now try and start XL again.

Also, NAV has shown to cause "Excel caused an invalid page
fault in module VBE6.DLL".
You might try disabling the Office plug in of NAV.

Finally, this is what MS has to say:
